57The coat of arms of Johan Joseph van Dort and Gerret van Dort-KroonThe coat of arms of Johan Joseph van Dort and Gerret van Dort-Kroon
Johan Joseph van Dort, baptised in 1784, was a "gouvernements-solliciteur". He wrote letters and petitions addressed to the government for people, who could not write or read. It was quite common then to mark letters with a seal stamp by means of a signet ring as a token of authenticity. In the collection Musschart (CBG) a certificate can be found that Johan Joseph used this ring on 2 february 1852 in The Hague. A stamp of his ring can be found in the archives of Arnhem.
A possible explanation of the origins of this coat of arms is: up left: anchor, signifies his grandfather from fathers side, a skipper. up right: dolphin, signifies his grandfather from mothers side, a fisherman. below: wheel topped with a horn, signifies his father, a traveling merchant.
Since Johan Joseph had no children, it can be assumed that his signet-ring was heritated by Gerret Willem Christiaan, the son of his brother Willem Christiaan who was a chemist in The Hague. Willem Christiaan van Dort was granted permission by king Willem which allowed his son Gerret Willem Christiaan van Dort and his descendants to use the surname "van Dort-Kroon". Willem Christiaan combined his surname Van Dort and that of his wife Dina Kroon. In the collection of Steenkamp-Damstra (CBG) a stamp of his seal (Waddinxveen, 1880) can be found.

This shield is mentioned in the book Armorial General from J.B. Rietstap (1884-1887). It is attributed to the family van Dorth. (collection Musschart).

The shield and motto from the family Van Dort from Sri Lanka, the descendants of Cornelis Jansz Van Dort. Tree standing in sea, with a star on top. The motto means "We hope for better". The VOC divided the country in different provinces and each province had a coat of arms. The VOC coat of arms contains the tree and the sea. Another explanation is that appel tree from Holland with a star from the East. Drawn after the 'Arms, Armorial Bearings of the Dutch period in Ceylon by J.L. Kalenberg Van Dort, Colombo Ceylon 1889, as part of a typed genealogy after van Altendorff.

73van Dort - Delftvan Dort - Delft
Attributed to Elisabeth Janssen van Dort from Delft and Constantia van Dort, married to Marcelis van de Goes in Middelburg. Marcelis was born in Delft. Elisabeth's parents were Jan Jansz van Dort (probably burried 24-11-1696 (Nieuwe kerk)) and Jopgen Arijens Hoogeveen (burried 19-07-1700 (Nieuwe kerk), from Delft, date of mariage 07-04-1663. If we can connect the 2 branches of Constantia and Lijsbeth, we might be able to attribute the coat of arms to a whole branch of van Dorts.

75Water gate of Colombo by J.L. Kalenberg Van DortWater gate of Colombo by J.L. Kalenberg Van Dort
In this painting by van Dort from 1888 the Watergate is shown, bearing the same date. Van Dort also mentions that it has been closed up since he painted it. The building as a whole is very similar though the one in the painting seems to be narrower. Still it is obviously not the same gate as the one on the picture. It seems to be lower, and there are windows on both sides. It could be the same gate viewed from opposite sides but identification awaits further investigation.
